What they have been saying about Serpentyne...
...a stylish and fresh-sounding record ... I found myself readily warming to the charms of Maggie and her consort. David Kidman, fRoots, UK. These days mediaeval and renaissance music is usually to be found in the rarefied atmosphere of Radio 3 or the concert hall. In the hands of Maggie Sand and Serpentyne it once again becomes a living, breathing thing. Toby Freeman, Folk London, UK. To create a rich sound that crosses the boundaries of traditional and early music requires exceptional talent, insight and the dedication to persist until the right blend has been achieved. Serpentyne demonstrate that they have all three requisites... Those for whom such a cross-over is viewed with hesitation might find that this is the album that will change their minds. Jacqueline Patten, English Dance and Song, UK.
Take English singer Maggie Sand with Mark Powell (citterno, hurdy-gurdy) and add some woodwinds and percussion for a sort of Blackmore's Night, but with a more rootsy approach. There are songs and dance tunes from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. A pleasant and decent album that is worth to give it a try. Folkworld, Germany
...the musical journey moved back to the times of the alchemists with Maggie Sand. With her project Serpentyne she draws from many sources and stirs the elixir until a special sound is formed. The audience at the Hinterhalt were allowed a taste of the brew. With her transcendental voice Maggie told timeless stories. The audience were impressed by over two hours of musical narrative. Andrea Weber, Isar-Loisachbote, Munich, Germany
Maggie has a beautiful voice and is ably backed by her six-piece band... together they produce a fantastic sound. Serpentyne are at Orpington Folk Club on Friday 6th March, so if you wish to hear them again, make it a date. Clive Meggs, the FAB Club, Grays, Essex, UK.
Today we welcome Maggie Sand and Serpentyne- a real treat for FaBclub friends and aficionados, and one that I have definitely been looking forward to for ages. What a treat! Serpentyne always have fascinating material - first is a really compelling song written in middle Spanish. Lovely vocals and recorder - breaking into hurdy-gurdy and harmonium. Keeping the flow they move into a tune to lead people in or out of things like feasts or battle - just don't let anyone tell you that folk music is quiet - for this one all instruments were running on 11!
...After the bumper FaBclub raffle it is back to the second set from Serpentyne - a song written in Middle English about groovy Winchester (clearly the place to be at the time). What an amazing band this is.... A lovely medieval tune called tune called "The Boys of the Mountain" rounds off the set. FaBulous! And we manage to persuade them to do an encore of course "La Petite Nette"... another French traditional tune. Thank you Maggie and Serpentyne - a high quality and entertaining afternoon. Liz Montgomery, the Fab (Folk, Acoustic & Blues) Club, Grays, reviewing our return visit there.
Last month we were very privileged to have Maggie Sand and Serpentyne as our special guests. What a great evening they gave us. There was a decent attendance at the club and everyone enjoyed the evening immensely. They have a good following in Europe and I think they are destined to become established favourites in British folk venues and concert halls. Aiden Mullinder, the Jug of Punch Folk Club, Sutton Coldfield.
Those of you who remember Shave The Monkey and loved them need to see Serpentyne... they were terrific. Everyone enjoyed them. Sue Tuckey, Fridayfolk Club, Orpington, UK.
...Just wanted to say a HUGE thank you for playing at our event on Saturday. We raised nearly £10,000, which is amazing. Kate Cowie, North West Cancer Research
